中国、ロシアが進める極超音速滑空体(HGV=Hypersonic Glide Vehicle)の配備に対し、日米両国は共同で次世代型ミサイル防衛システムGPIの開発協定を正式に締結した(May 15, 2024)。米国防総省ミサイル防衛局 (MDA=Missile Defense Agency)は2024年9月25日、GPIはノースロップ・グラマン (NG=Northrop Grumman)社案を採用すると決定した。これを受け防衛省はNG社と共同開発を進めると発表した。

本稿は木村良一氏の寄稿です。新聞記者時代から感じていたことだが、組織がゆがむと、事故が起きる。拙著『日航・松尾ファイル』で扱った航空史上最悪の日航ジャンボ機墜落事故もそうだった。
事故機（国籍・登録番号JA8119）は7年前の1978年6月2日、大阪国際空港で着陸時にしりもち事故を起こし、機体尾部を破損している。日本航空は修理を機体製造元の米ボーイング社に任せた。だが、下側半分を新しく交換する後部圧力隔壁の修理で、メカニック（作業員）がミスを犯した。その結果、隔壁の強度が7割に落ち、飛行を繰り返すうちに金属疲労から亀裂が生じ、隔壁は飛行中に与圧空気によって風船が破裂するように破断した。
ブームの超音速実証試験機[XB-1]は今年3月22日に初飛行してから、性能と操縦性を確認しながら10回ほど試験飛行をし,それからマッハ1超音速飛行をする予定である。
