防衛装備庁は2020年(令和2年)3月31日付けで「スタンド・オフ防衛能力の取組」と題する研究開発ビジョンを公開、2030年台初頭までに極超音速ミサイルの実用化を目指す、と発表した。これによると２種類の極超音速兵器、すなわち「極超音速(巡航)誘導弾 (HCM=Hypersonic Cruise Missile)」と「(極超音速)滑空型飛翔体（HVGP=hyper Velocity Gliding Projectile）」を開発する。(Japan unveiled plans for hypersonic weapons, expected to enter service in the early 2030s, in a published document by the Acquisition, Technology, and Logistic Agency (ATLA) in March 2020. There will be two classes including Hypersonic Cruise Missile (HCM) and Hyper Velocity Gliding Projectile (HVGP).
