海上自衛隊は2025年5月7日、中国が海洋進出を拡大・強化する南シナ海で、最新型フリゲート「やはぎ/FFM 5」が、イギリス海軍の哨戒艦「スペイ/HMS Spey」、イタリア海軍フリゲート「アントニオ・マルチェリア/IN ITS Antonio Marceglia」と共同訓練を行った。訓練は「自由で開かれたインド太平洋」の維持・実現のために行われた。
