NASAのニューホライゾンズ探査機は2015年に冥王星に接近、現在はカイパーベルトの最も遠方を通過中で、宇宙塵の嵐(cosmic dust storm)の中にいる。この宇宙塵の存在は、これまで想像していた太陽系の外縁がさらに遠方に広がっていることを示している。

米空軍協会(U.S. Ari Force Association)ミッチェル航空宇宙研究所(Mitchell Institute for Aerospace Studies)は、2024年2月6日に「破壊的な航空攻撃を阻止するには有人機を支援する無人戦闘機(CCA)が必要(The Need for Collaborative Combat Aircraft for Disruptive Air Warfare)」と題する報告書を公表した。「中国が開始する攻撃に対抗するには、比較的低価格の通常性能型無人戦闘機(CCA)を多数投入し、有人機と共同で、あるいは単独で運用するのが最も効果的である」と結論付けている。

小型月着陸実証機「SLIM」(Smart Lander for Investigating Moon)の最大の目標は「狙った場所への高精度着地」であった。そして目標の「神酒の海」のクレーター「SHIOLI」（栞/しおり）近くの斜面に狙い通りに着地した。この着地技術は今後の月探査に活用されることになるだろう。

本稿は木村良一氏の寄稿です。ヒューマン・エラーについてあらためて考えさせられた航空事故である。年明けの羽田空港で、日本航空の旅客機と海上保安庁の飛行機が衝突した事故だ。思い込みや勘違い、誤認、錯覚など人間がゆえに起こすミスが、ヒューマン・エラーである。航空業界ではこのヒューマン・エラーをいかになくすかが、大きな課題となっている。特に管制業務はコンピューターによる自動化、ハイテク化が進まず、管制官とパイロットにはコミュニケーション能力の向上が求められる。
オースタル社(Austal)のモーバイル造船所(Mobile, Alabama shipyard)は、米海軍の「遠征軍用高速輸送艦(EPF=Expeditionary Fast Transport ship)」の14隻目(EPF-14)を納入した。これは同型艦の最初のフライトII (Flight II)と呼ばれる型で、戦場で負傷した兵士の緊急手術が可能な設備を備えている。
